Amy Allibon, Director 

 

Amy Detrick Allibon, a 20-year veteran teacher, joins the BHS Choir Department as head director.  Mrs. Allibon began her career at Watauga Middle School in 1989 where she taught four years.  The next three years, she taught at Crockett Middle School in Irving where her Varsity Treble Choir performed for TMEA in 1996.  In the fall of 1996, Mrs. Allibon became the associate director of choirs at Haltom HS, and the following year, became the head director.  During her 12 years at Haltom, the Varsity Treble Choir performed for TMEA in 2000 and National American Choral Directors Association in 2001, and the A cappella Choir performed for TMEA in 2008.  This past year, Mrs. Allibon worked as the part time assistant director at Watauga MS.  Choirs under her direction are consistently awarded UIL Sweepstakes and Best in Class honors at festivals throughout the country.  She has traveled with choirs to England, Italy, Austria, Florida, New York, New Mexico, Louisiana, and throughout Texas.

 

Mrs. Allibon is the President-Elect of the Texas Choral Directors Association.

She served TMEA as the Region 5 High School Vocal Division Secretary, Chair-Elect, and Chair. She has also been an All-State Choir section leader for the Mixed and Treble Choirs. She is the recipient of the 2002 Haltom High Teacher of the Year Award, 2003 James Whitehead Coca Cola Outstanding Educator Award, 2003 Outstanding Music Alumni from Texas Tech Award, and the 2008 Score-A-Goal in the Classroom Bayard Friedman Hero Award.  A frequent clinician and adjudicator, she has conducted Region Choirs throughout Texas, Nebraska, and Connecticut, and has conducted All State Choirs in Arkansas and South Carolina.  She spends many weeks each summer teaching All State Choir Camps throughout the state and enjoys encouraging students in that process tremendously.

 

Mrs. Allibon holds a Bachelors of Music Education from TCU and a Masters in Music/Choral Conducting from Texas Tech.  She lives in a historic neighborhood in Fort Worth and spends any spare time restoring her 1920’s home with her husband of 18 years, Rob.  Mrs. Allibon loves to travel, read, ski, shop, and spend time with family and friends when she’s not directing a choir.

Peggy Graff, Associate Director
 
Peggy Graff moved to Texas in 1998 with her husband, Chuck, who is an associate pastor at First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth.  Prior to 1998, she taught K-12 music for 16 years in the Lincoln and Omaha Public School Systems of Nebraska; and since has taught choral music in the Carroll ISD and the Birdville ISD.  Mrs. Graff is currently in her ninth year as associate director of the Birdville High School Choral Department.  In 2004, she developed and implemented the AP Music Theory course at Birdville High School, which was recently awarded a three-year grant with Advanced Placement Strategies and the O’Donnell Foundation.  As a professional pianist and organist, she has been an active accompanist throughout Texas. In 2004, she accompanied for the TMEA All-State Honor Choir in San Antonio and frequently accompanies for Region and District Honor Choirs in Region 5 and for the Texas Choral Directors Association conventions.  Mrs. Graff is also active as an adjudicator, clinician, and conductor.  She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and from Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a Master of Sacred Music degree.  She has completed post-graduate work in conducting and in harpsichord performance at UCLA and SMU. She has served as principal organist and associate music director at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine for the past ten years.

Voice Teachers

Laura Stevenson

Laura Stevenson graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Vocal Pedagogy/Performance from Texas Women's University, where she has continued her graduate work in the field of vocal performance. She has performed for nearly thirty years in the musical theatre, pop and classical fields. Laura Lewis Stevenson has sung with Casa Manana, Dallas Summer Musicals, Houston Grand Opera Apprentice Program, Dallas Lyric Opera and the Denton Light Opera Company as well as several local community theatres. She now restricts her work to freelance soprano oratorio in order to spend time sailing with her husband, Jason, and two little boys, Nathan and Colin.

Mrs. Stevenson is the full-time voice instructor at Birdville High School. She also maintains a small private studio. Before Birdville opened, Mrs. Stevenson taught at Richland High School, her alma mater. She has taught private voice for eighteen years. Mrs. Stevenson has taught over fifty Texas All-State Choir members and the leads in every musical from Birdville High School since it opened. Her studio had a record-breaking numbers of semi-finalists, finalists, and winners at NATS competition in the past three years.  Her students have included Show Choir members, Miss Texas pageant contestants, Johnnie High Country Music Revue Singers and professional recording artists. Mrs. Stevenson also lectures on song literature for the young singer at local universities. Laura Stevenson's professional affiliations include Sigma Alpha Iota, Texas Music Educators Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Music Teachers National Association and the National Opera Association.
